The Grom Tales: “Cold Water” by Guest Blogger Easton Powell

Step inside the philosophical mind of 17 year old Easton Powell of San Diego, CA, an old soul with a fresh outlook on the bodysurfing/handboarding lifestyle of Southern California.

He’s writing is influenced by classic authors like John Steinbeck and Henry Thoreau, who have inspired him to “look deep into nature and the beauty behind complexity and simplicity.”

On early morning in November, during a winter session at this favorite local break, he was inspired to write and share the following tale.

“Cold Water” 

My feet could feel the thousands individual pieces of sand under my blistered toes.

My eyes stared dead ahead focusing at the thrilling sets, that were rolling into my local bodysurfing spot (Marine Street, La Jolla) my body radiated with the goosebumps forced upon my tanned skin due to the morning air.

It was Dawn patrol at its finest, words can’t describe it’s beauty.

My buddy and I were the only people insane enough to wake up this early and get in the increasingly cold pacific ocean water, engaged in the ultimate thrill of scoring some timeless rides and valuable memories.

Diving into the frigid water was purifying and exhilarating. It woke our sleepy minds and intensified our sense of the oceans stealthy powers.

Wave after wave we scored just simply cruising on our Slyde Handboards. Every stroke of our arms and every kick of our fins seemed like a pinnacle of perfection on this day. The clear blue water silhouetted our body's and there were no worries in our minds. Every problem escaped, every worry ceased to become relevant.

Once out of the water and looking back upon the thrilling waves and memories, I realized why I am in love with the ocean. It's the waves, they’re truly mesmerizing, a hypnotizing blend of beauty and nature. In that moment I realized, this is the kind of life I want to life and will continue to live. The life of being connected to the ocean.
